BISON 1

The first in a series of paintings, this Bison image will explore traditional to abstract works of an iconic and enduring part of the myth & romance of The American Frontier.

WINGMASTER

The relationship between a water foul hunter and a bird dog is legendary. It is a transcendent, emotional connection. This composition was extremely challenging for me and yet the most enjoyable. At 28 x 36, I used my fingers, twigs, q-tips and a tiny brush to execute the entire painting… whew! Wingmaster represents a pinnacle moment in the hunter/ retriever experience. When the bird is downed, this retriever must locate and return the bird with an angel’s touch.

28” x 36”    $550.00

CROSSED SWORDS

A painting of two rhinoceroses in an immovable stance… horns up, ready to fight. Rhinos are territorial and aggressive. In this composition the rhinos have already violated each other’s space. Yet the only full color area in the art is down the center. As an artist, this allegorical stand off represents “creation & destruction.”

FRESH WATER WALTZ

The beautiful rhythmic dance of an angler and flowing water, fly-fishing down river.

THE FURY

In all the wild, there is no more frightening  sound than the roar of a lion.
The deep, prolonged cry announces the presence of the King of Beasts..

21” x 33”    $350.00

THE HUNT

I have chosen to depict the lion with a celebration of line painting. The intense line work expresses the majesty and fury of the King Cat.

31” x 35”    $350.00

HELL CAT

A ferocious beast with enormous strength explodes from the cover of darkness and overwhelms its prey in a heartbeat. I chose to push the composition to elicit an immediate emotional experience.

A Pistol Packin’,Bubble Popin’, Pioneer of Pop Art.

OSPREY NESTING

The spectacular Aerobatics performed by the Osprey during nesting is breathtaking. The male osprey’s sky dance delivers the nesting to the female who builds the structure. Some nests are as large as 7 feet deep and 3 feet in diameter.

BUCKAROO

I have always been fascinated by the Buckaroo. They are the art and class of wrangling. Known for their mastery of horsemanship, flashy style and unique personal expression, the Buckaroo embraces life with purpose and commitment.

36”x 24”    $350.00

LIVIN LARGE

Drawing is the most intimate and immediate form of self-expression. The sense of energy and communication that can be captured in mere strokes of graphite, ink, oil pencil or any of the other simple mediums is astonishing to me.

19”x 30”    $450.00

HIGH CALIBER

What a glorious medium. Much like the process of pen and ink, drawing in oil pencil is a full commitment…There is no erasing, however it is not only for the brave of heart. Oil pencil comes in a wide spectrum of colors and most significantly in a water soluble version. My pencil can spin and scrub, smear and wash across the surface depicting a rich calligraphy of textures and values or lend itself to the most subtle indication.

25”x 35”    $450.00

VISION

There is a profound, visceral experience creating Art with the harmony of two mediums. Colored pencil and Water Color, Art and Design stage a dramatic synthesis of intellect and emotion.

23” x 30”   $450.00

WAY OUT WEST

The essence of the west remains constant. To me, the evolution of the American West is an exciting journey of discovery, bravery and wonderment.  There was once only nature. “Way out West” tells the story of a cowboy casting his gaze on the grandeur and immensity of the most beautiful country in the world.

25”x 38”  $450.00

BROKE

A bronc buster saddles up to a keg of dynamite and you got an Earthquake down below! One wants on. One wants off. Both get broke.

26” x 40”    $450.00

BRONCO BALLET

“Bronco Ballet” expresses the dance between an unbroken Bronc’ and a cowboy Hell-bent on correcting that situation. This was a particularly challenging piece to do.  The power and movement, juxtaposed to the shapeless, abstract depiction of dust and atmosphere required a significant amount of invention, detail and time.

25”x 38”    $350.00

FIRST LITE

There is a magic moment in angling when the dawn begins to break and reveals the phenomenon of water & light. The first cast is released and the pursuit of the elusive begins.

SOARING EAGLE

There was once a time when man and nature lived in harmony. There was no ownership. A proud people witnessed a devastating change to their environment and way of life. They would never soar with the Eagles again.

19.5”x 27”    $250.00

PAPPY

I met pappy on a ranch in Kalispell Montana when I was 14. He is the dearest most genuine person you could ever meet. Pen & ink seemed to be too harsh to represent such a gentle man. Growing up as a cowboy is a tough life. It takes the courage & faith that most people don’t have today. Pen & ink was the right choice. For ninety years, Pappy left his brand of truth & honesty on so many lives. Though time & trespass are etched in his face, I am driven to honor his integrity with this portrait.

19” x 29”    $250.00

CLYDE

Tough is as tough does. I spent a time growing up on his ranch in Montana. Clyde left an indelible impression in my life, just as my pen and ink does as an art medium. The process requires a full commitment with every mark; an action that speaks louder than words. This was Clyde, a man of true grit.

19” x 29”    $250.00

BIG CLOUD

He was a warrior. A legend in protecting the rights of his tribe. Pen & ink depicts the harsh reality of a life embroiled in merciless conflict. Deep, dark eyes, and stern expression confirm Big Cloud was a man of vision.

20” x 30”    $250.00

PEACE PIPE

A ceremonial tobacco pipe used by some Native American Indians as a symbol of peace to seal a covenant or treaty. All treaties between the U.S. Government and Native American tribes were broken. A Cultural Genocide. Most sacred commitments lasted no longer than the time it took for the smoke to clear. The feathers fan out widely as a promise of hope and love. They quickly wither to a few strands that feebly remain attached to the pipe. The intricate line work details a labyrinth of lies and deception in this farewell known as “peace”.

26” x 31”    $250.00

BEAR CLAW

I have always been drawn to subjects that lend themselves to emotional capture. “Bear Claw” expresses all the pride and pain of an Indian Nation. There is a deep sense of compassion in his eyes as well as the dignity of a great warrior. The black and white detail of pen & ink brings power and impact to the harsh reality of what the Indian people endured.

19” x 30”    $250.00

BLACK JACK

The tapestry of the American West has many unique characters woven into it. Bad guys like “Black Jack” here. Bold, resourceful, powerful men. I believe Art must also embrace these characteristics…it cannot be casual. Although I realize the need for intensity,I have also come to appreciate that there are both technical and emotional considerations in the creation of worthwhile Art. I have learned the value of discipline, hard work and that “doing it right” takes time. My approach to Art continually evolves. Short cuts, formats and patterns are the bandits of the creative process.

27” x  33”    $250.00

LUCKY

Portraiture is one of the bravest choices an artist can make. The artist’s view can be brutally honest. “Lucky” was a Rodeo Clown. A Comic Genius. The funniest clown there has ever been. A person’s face can be viewed as a kind of road map to the life they have lived. “Lucky” was the saddest person I have ever known.
